Creating Accessible Content: A Quick-Start Checklist

To create accessible content, CPABC publishers must follow WCAG 2.1 AA.  Below are some key elements that are included in the guideline. 

  • Include proper alt text for images
  • 200% Zoom test
  • Color contrast between background and text
  • Color contrast between image and text on images
  • Content can be accessed in a logical way with only your keyboard
  • Include accessible videos and multimedia
  • Create subtitles and transcripts
  • Use descriptive URLs
  • Use descriptive link text
  • Use HTML Symantec (h1, h2, h3, h4) to organize the structure of your content
  • Put periods in abbreviations
  • Describe your links
  • Use colour appropriately
  • Keep your copy simple
  • Design your forms for accessibility
  • Ensure banners and moving carousels can be stopped or slowed down?
  • Ensure the programmatic code is structured properly so that the reading/navigation order is correct when using a screen reader
  • Use tables for tabular data, not for layout
  • Vertical/Horizontal test
  • Use ARIA roles and landmarks (but only when necessary)
  • Create skip links
