AI in Practice: Smarter Tools for Accounting & Finance Event Recap — 39 professionals walked in curious. They walked out informed and equipped
The CPABC Kootenay West Chapter hosted a sold‑out professional development session on May 12 at Selkirk College, welcoming 39 attendees for a practical, plain‑language look at how AI is reshaping accounting and finance work – AI in Practice: Smarter Tools for Accounting & Finance.
Presenters Mike Konkin, CPA, MBA and Stephen Harris, MA — both long‑time Selkirk College instructors — shared real examples of how they use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and NotebookLM in tax work, financial analysis, teaching, communications, and workflow improvement.
Participants learned:
- Practical prompting frameworks
- High‑value CPA and finance use cases
- Privacy, ethics, and professional‑judgment considerations
- Live demonstrations of AI tools in action
Attendees travelled from across our wide Kootenay West region — and even from the Kootenay East Chapter — to take part in this timely and relevant session.
A warm thank‑you to everyone who joined us, and an extra‑special thank‑you to our Kootenay West Chapter volunteers for organizing a welcoming, community‑focused event that delivered real value to local professionals.
