CPA Volunteer Spotlight: Farhad Mistry, CPA, CGA, PMP
Farhad Mistry, CPA, CGA, PMP, is a Senior Manager, Business Product Management at WorkSafeBC and a dedicated CPA Financial Literacy volunteer since 2015. While he has presented to a wide range of audiences, he is especially passionate about helping elementary school students develop healthy financial habits and confidence with money.
Why did you choose to volunteer to teach the audience/topic that you do?
In recent years, I have focused primarily on elementary school students. It began when I saw a request from a teacher at a school just five minutes from my home. Although I was hesitant about presenting to young children, I decided to challenge myself. I was comfortable delivering CPD sessions for CPABC, workplaces, accounting firms, and regional CPA groups, but engaging elementary students required me to communicate in an entirely different and valuable way.
What is your most memorable experience as a financial literacy presenter?
My most memorable experience was presenting financial literacy sessions to my younger son’s class. It was special to share that experience with him and his classmates. Another moment that has stayed with me: during a discussion about financial mentors, a Grade 5 student enthusiastically raised her hand and named me as hers. It was an unexpected and humbling reminder that when we volunteer, even a single session can leave a meaningful impression on a young person.

What would you say to other CPAs who are thinking of volunteering with the Financial Literacy Program?
I would encourage other CPAs to volunteer because it benefits both the community and the volunteer. Learning to engage elementary school students and explain ideas in simple, relatable language is a valuable skill that transfers into the workplace. Speaking with high school students also gives you an opportunity to share your career path and life experiences as they consider their own futures. It is deeply fulfilling, professionally valuable, and one of the most rewarding ways to use your CPA experience.
