Looking back on your last decade, what moments stand out as personal highlights? For Martin Leung, CPA, milestones include becoming a leader with his firm, tapping into the power of mentorship, and learning some critical lessons about embracing uncertainty and challenges in order to grow. A tax partner with PwC's private business group, Martin joined the firm as an associate in 2014 and served as CPABC’s first valedictorian in 2015. He recently reflected on the opportunities he has embraced since graduating and shared a piece of advice for that valedictorian who took the stage a decade ago.

The Focus Today

Martin Leung“Undoubtedly, it’s helping clients solve their most important problems,” says Martin when asked about the best part of his job today. “It's incredibly rewarding to understand their businesses and delve into their unique concerns and objectives. Every client presents new challenges and learning opportunities, keeping me on my toes and allowing me to grow.”

Martin focuses on providing tax-efficient solutions, staying current with tax legislation, case law, and CRA updates to ensure strategies are compliant. Mentorship is also a cornerstone of his role. “I guide my team on projects and support their development to help them succeed,” he says. On leadership, Martin adds, “I see my style as a safety net – creating an environment where teammates feel empowered to step out of their comfort zones, knowing they’ll be supported if they stumble.”

Looking Back: A Pivotal Moment

While his career over the last decade has been eventful, Martin recalls that one of the most memorable moments happened early on. “I was part of a team advising a couple on the sale of their business,” he notes. “They had spent decades building their company and were ready to retire. As a junior member of the team, I got to see firsthand just how complex the tax implications of selling a business can be. It was eye-opening to realize how crucial a tax advisor's role is in helping clients navigate significant life events; the tailored tax advice we provided helped the couple preserve more of the wealth they had worked so hard to create, ensuring they could enjoy a comfortable retirement.”

Career Surprises That Shape a CPA Path

Martin LeungOne of the most eye-opening aspects of Martin’s career has been discovering just how important having a strong support network – especially through mentorship – can be. “There were times I felt stuck in my career, unsure of which direction to take,” he says. “I was afraid of making the wrong choice and regretting it. Fortunately, I had great mentors who shared their perspectives.” A memorable scenario came shortly after he received his CPA designation. “I wasn’t sure I could see myself doing the same work for the rest of my career and was contemplating leaving the firm to pursue other opportunities,” he recalls. Before deciding, Martin spoke openly with a partner and mentor. “He listened, then connected me with another partner who exposed me to different work that resonated and gave me a new sense of direction.” Looking back, he notes, “It would have been easy to make the decision to leave the firm in isolation, without realizing the other opportunities that were available. This taught me the immense value of seeking advice and support from others.”

Ten Years Forward: What’s Next

Martin LeungOn his future focus, Martin says, “Continuing to help my clients solve their biggest problems. This has always been the most rewarding part of my job, and I can't imagine not being involved in crafting solutions that make a significant impact on their businesses. I also believe that technology, particularly generative AI, will fundamentally change what it means to be an accountant. Staying current and integrating new tools will be a major focus.”

While looking ahead, Martin also remembers the valedictorian who graduated 10 years ago and has a piece of advice for him – and for all graduates today: “Early in your career is the best time to explore. Don’t be afraid to take on something uncomfortable – it could be the opportunity that propels your career.” He adds, “It’s in those uncertain moments that you learn the most about yourself and your capabilities.”
