CPA volunteer spotlight: Dr. Tamara A. Krug, Ph.D., CPA, CGA
Dr. Tamara A. Krug has always believed in the power of education to transform lives. With a Ph.D. and CPA designation, and a career as a professor, she brings a wealth of knowledge to her volunteer work with the CPA Financial Literacy Program.
Volunteering with purpose and precision
Since 2013, Dr. Krug has shared her expertise in taxation, finance, and budgeting with communities across British Columbia. She notes, “There’s a saying: ‘Preparing to deliver a message to your audience takes one hour and an entire lifetime.’ That’s exactly how I feel—volunteering through teaching and sharing has been the most fulfilling way for me to help others.” Her thoughtful approach and passion for helping others make her a standout volunteer in the program.
What inspired you to volunteer with the CPA Financial Literacy Program?
“My first meaningful experience was preparing tax returns for low-income individuals and families. I’ve been volunteering with the Canada Revenue Agency since 2012. Coming from an academic background in finance, accounting, and taxation, I was eager to contribute to the CPA Financial Literacy Program. I find it incredibly rewarding to develop and deliver presentations where I can immediately see the impact of my efforts.”
What is your most memorable experience as a financial literacy presenter?
“One of my most satisfying experiences was receiving numerous questions from students during a session at a local school. It was a delightful surprise—they were truly engaged and listening!”
How do you ensure your financial literacy sessions make a difference?
“I enjoy presenting to different audiences. However, newcomers to Canada in particular can be vulnerable or misinformed, so I value the chance to work with this group. When newcomers reach out to me after a session for further consultation, I go the extra mile to research and clarify information for them. Often, I’m the only professional available to provide free guidance, and I take that responsibility seriously.”
