While mentors are often eager to share advice and solutions, meaningful growth frequently begins with thoughtful questions. Powerful questions can help mentees gain clarity, challenge assumptions, explore new possibilities, and take ownership of their personal and professional development. They also strengthen mentoring relationships by building trust, encouraging reflection, and creating space for deeper, more impactful conversations.
Through discussion, practical examples, and audience participation, participants will explore the difference between advising, mentoring and coaching, learn what makes a question “powerful,” and discover strategies for fostering greater self-awareness, critical thinking, and accountability in their mentoring conversations.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the role powerful questions play in effective mentoring conversations
- Distinguish between advising, mentoring, and coaching approaches
- Identify the characteristics of questions that promote reflection, learning, and growth
- Apply practical questioning techniques to help mentees gain clarity and generate their own solutions
- Use a simple coaching framework to support more meaningful and productive mentoring discussion
