Organizations spend a significant portion of their annual budgets every year on marketing and in particular branding. Large Fortune-sized companies even have large departments staffed with brand zealots that work tirelessly to ensure that the corporate brand is never misrepresented or ‘burned’ by employees, contractors, and partners.
Business leaders spend an enormous amount of time focused on the brand of the company yet very, very few spend any time or put much effort into their own personal brand.
Essentially, a personal brand is how you are viewed by others. Steve Jobs once said that your brand is a “Trust mark” where you either have peoples’ trust or you don’t. Others have described a personal brand as the “conversation that people have about you when you are not in the room.”
Personal brands in today’s world are becoming equally important to an individual as a brand is to a company. You only need to look as far as Facebook to see what some people post about themselves that is destroying their personal brand.
